With a headline like this, it must be first mentioned that this is not a paranoid conspiratorial piece on how delegates were STOLEN (all caps), votes weren’t counted or the major media somehow sabotaged the Ron Paul campaign. Rather, it is important to take a realistic look at the goals that Ron Paul’s campaign set out to accomplish, and examine how he fared.
First of all, did Ron Paul actually enter this election to win? Before we start getting our competitive juices flowing, just think about what Ron Paul stands for and what a realistic assessment of this kind of “victory” would have meant. He would have gone to the Oval Office with a congress that absolutely hated and loathed him, departments that feared him and would fight him as though their jobs were at stake (which they would be) and a public (after fickle popular support had waned) which was bewildered with the kind of radical policies and actions that were coming from the president. A Ron Paul presidency may have destroyed the best fruits of his candidacy.
Ron Paul’s campaign has always been a bottom-up phenomenon. Secondly, it is a more purely philosophical and ideological agenda - rather than a pragmatic political one. While many have criticized that this is a bad thing - is it not more beneficial in the long-term to sacrifice an election in order to generate hundreds of thousands of individual awakenings to liberty?
Rather than being humble, Paul was being very honest when he said countless times that the campaign wasn’t about him, but about the people who supported him. Paul’s campaign jarred the intellectually lazy and cynical over a few months (which may have been all they needed), and made them take a moment to consider what freedom, consitutionalism and liberty really mean. He showed us what a free society should look like.
This is key, because rather than end up in a politically neutered position of central power, Ron Paul has lit the spark of changed hearts and minds. And for those that have not changed, especially many conservatives, they have had to reconsider what kind of GOP they now support. Paul’s campaign was in the spotlight for enough time to act as a mirror against the new GOP - and show conservatives just how long it’s been since they took a good look at themselves - many of them no longer recognizing their own faces.
Ron Paul’s expectations have been wildly exceeded by his campaign. For the first time in decades, there is an active block of people who are learning about the evils of central banking, empire-building and welfarism. These aren’t the crazies and kooks who were in the cracks of society, burying guns in Idaho - these are regular folks, who work regular jobs and have become evangelical about the message of freedom.
This movement, which has been scattered and divided across the spectrum: libertarians, constitutionalists, republicans, democrats, independents, anarchists and even some former socialists have been united under Paul’s big tent platform. And while it may be easy to ridicule the conspiracy theorists, it is a testimony to the movement that they now join with college professors, intellectuals and businessmen. Or the atheists, homosexual activists and objectivists now aligning with radical Christians and New Agers. These people now realize that they have more in common than they once thought - and while disagreements remain, there is now more than a undefined dissatisfaction with what has happened in America, but a visible way out.
John McCain or Barack Obama will go to the White House in 2008. But their policies, which favour a continuation of America’s slow decline into the also-rans of history, will prove Ron Paul right again. People like BJ Lawson, Murray Sabrin and Carl Bunce are setting themselves up as future advocates. Many of these would have never thought to seek political office, but have been inspired by the optimism and hope that Ron Paul exampled.
Ron Paul won in 2008, by taking the exact opposite approach of most politicians. Instead of coalition building, compromising, pandering and standing for nothing and everything at the same time, Paul explicitly denounced the problems we have created and boldly proclaimed the solutions found in freedom and liberty. Ron Paul has mobilized many in the coming generation to build a better future. This long-term investment may not have resulted in an immediate gratification, but over time, compounded with interest, this movement may very well pay off.

Crazy neo-Confederate Ron Paul will never be president. That is a GOOD thing.
This is a great piece Colin. In my opinion you have captured the essence of RP’s campaign. It’s about us and the changes we need to make.
“Crazy neo-Confederate Ron Paul will never be president. That is a GOOD thing.”
Yes! Totally agree. The last thing America needs are balanced budgets, a sensible foreign policy, sound currency, personal liberties, and strong national sovereignty.
It doesn’t matter that the president of the NAACP says that Paul isn’t a racist. We need to do everything we can to keep this man out of office.
I will sit in glee as i watch our cost of living double, credit companies fold, stock market crash and homes that are less then 5k(current cost) in Detroit. Let us see how the 2012 elections go.
I really appreciate a honest reflection of the past year and everything that Ron Paul has accomplished. My husband and I have been so jaded with the political process that we haven’t voted for years, this year everything changed. We listened to this man we have never heard of before, Ron Paul and we started feeling hopeful and this ignited passion. For the first time ever we contributed money to a campaign, we attended the caucus,(which we never knew about) and my husband become a Ron Paul delegate. We were complacent, lazy and I am ashamed, because of the past generations that have sacrificed so much to ensure our freedom and uphold the Constitution, and we have let them down by continuing to vote for the same people that undermine our sovereignty, and don’t care about the American people. We will still vote for Ron Paul in November even if we write his name in, “A vote for principle is never a wasted vote” will also continue to educate ourselves and the people around us.
indyrick said: I will sit in glee as i watch our cost of living double, credit companies fold, stock market crash and homes that are less then 5k(current cost) in Detroit.
I won’t. I derive no pleasure from tragedy or from the suffering of fellow human beings.
Bravo! Nearly 100 years of corruption and radical socialism is not going to be turned around by one man’s presidency. The ship of state is enormous and cannot be turned back on the right course overnight by a simple change of captains. Ron Paul ran to inspire a movement just as Goldwater inspired the GOP in the 1960’s. Mission accomplished and I would say even more effectively than with Goldwater. Sure, I want him to be president, but that was not the central reason for Paul running. BTW..Trolls like Bill are jerks, but the beauty of the freedom movement is we support your right to be a jerk if you want to…as long as it does not infringe on anyone elses rights to life, liberty and property. As much as I dislike Bill’s opinion, I’ll fight to the death to support his right to say it. Opinion’s are like a-holes but, like it or not, some a-holes have opinions.
Ron Paul is my hero, and my inspiration.
To me, he is an American hero in the same manner as George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, George Mason, James Madison, Patrick Henry, John Paul Jones, Thomas Paine, and etc.
Because of him, I genuinely believe we can be free. In my mind, I already am.
Four years from now we will not recognize our country. Maybe then the sheeple will be ready to listen to what Dr. Paul and his supporters have been saying all along. We can hope that our nation will allow itself to be educated before we self-destruct as a mature welfare state. I too have never voted before, but will write-in Ron Paul in November. He has been the first candidate I could put my faith in without feeling like I was “choosing the lesser of two evils, and therefore choosing evil”.
Thank you Colin for a great article.
I am from Idaho, my guns are not buried!
R3VOLUTION!
He is the ONLY candidate at the debate that talked about what the problems in US really were. He was not tap dancing to special interest groups agendas, avoiding issues by talking around direct questions, or bascially posturing, and spewing out canned rhetoric hoping to gain votes. He was the ONLY one who is genuinely concerned about the US, Americans, war, the economy, our rights, and our future. He tackled important topics and knew exactly what he was talking about. He made the rest look like exactly what they are - oportunistic buffooms.
Ron Paul may never be President of the US, but I guarantee one day soon a Ron Pauler will. Ron Paul’s r3VOLution, is attached to Ron Paul, because this man most accurately reflects our ideals. Ron Paul’s r3VOLution will continue.
Last fall, I went to Washington DC to meet Dr. NO. I was never prouder, than to stand and tell him he was my hero, and has been for years. He signed my campaign yardsign, and I brought it back to Atlanta, auctioned it and donated the money to his campaign. I continue the fight in this r3VOLution day after day, since I first heard of Dr Paul, years ago.
Viva La r3VOLution!

RP motivated me to seek truth through knowledge. For that I will always be grateful. Hasn’t let me sleep any better at night, though.
Articles like this make me sick at the apathetic laziness and general malaise of all you wanna be Patriots. This election is NOT OVER, or does the word “presumptive” not mean anything to any of you give up and go homers?
Ron Paul has stated that he is STILL IN THIS RACE TO WIN. Rand Paul stated the very same thing just two days ago when he said Ron was going all the way to the National Convention. He entered this race to become President of the United States, to renew the Republican Party, and to protect our Constitution.
We cannot do any of those things if he does not win, and we, as a nation, CANNOT TAKE 4 MORE YEARS OF HELL AND LIES FROM EITHER MCCAIN OR OBAMA.
Get out of bed and off your couches, turn your TV’s off and START FIGHTING FOR OUR COUNTRY AND FOR THE ONLY MAN WHO STANDS FOR ANYTHING GOOD IN THIS NATION.
It’s certainly not people like you who are so ready to quit AT THE FIRST BLUSH OF DEFEAT that show us any integrity or good. But you can….just don’t quit on Ron, keep fighting the good fight of faith and patriotism, and help us make it all the way to the National Convention to get this great man elected President.
Washington didn’t quit after two solid years of brutal defeat after defeat, nor did Lincoln, when the other candidate became the presumptive nominee winning more delegates than him, by OVER 2/3rds. Lincoln went to the National convention anyway, and because of his followers, and grassroots followers like Ron has, Lincoln turned the presumptive nominees delegates into a brokered convention, and after 5 rounds of voting, became the real nominee.
Ron Paul will do the same thing, and we’re going to get him there. So take the looser attitude of this author and article, and throw it in the garbage, get off you butts, and go fight for something good. Let’s rewrite this article and REALLY entitle it WHY RON PAUL WON THE PRESIDENCY OF 2008!!!!!
RON PAUL FOR PRESIDENT 2008!!!!
RON PAUL FOR RE-ELECTION 2012!!!!!
Ron Paul is the next GREAT AMERICAN HERO. If you want to see this country get out of debt, out of the war and out of this hell we’re falling into then maybe you ought to vote for him. Like Wanda said. Ron Paul is the next Abe Lincoln, all he has to do is go to the convention and get nominated. Not everyone likes McBush as much as the media portrays. All you National GOP Delegates, remember, you DO have a choice.
Everybody does realize the election is over right?
@Wanda: As a practical matter, please explain how you envision Ron Paul securing the GOP nomination and winning the election in November.
I love the guy - I’ve contributed to his Congressional campaigns for the past ten years - but it sure looks like McCain has the required number of delegates. Do you know something that the rest of us don’t?
“Everybody does realize the election is over right?”
Not according to Hillary. She may be holding out for an assassination, at least until Saturday. Yeah, I know. She didn’t mean it that way. Whatever. I just can’t bring myself to give her the benefit of the doubt. It’s a simple matter of credibility.
And although I’m not wishing death on anyone McCain is old, and despite what his doctors have said, I don’t think he is in the best of health. Statistically speaking the odds are against him with the kind of cancer he had. He could get sick. He could die. We all will some day. I’m not being morbidly optimistic, I’m just sayin’ it ain’t over ’till it’s over.
Colin, a must say kudos. It is inspiring to know either way, the impact and influence we have all experienced is viral. I understand the ship metaphor, as Ron used it himself a few months back. I have to point out, there are many congressional elections ahead in the next year, and IF Dr. Paul were to become the President, that serves as notice to ALL available slots, and if that miracle becomes reality, I cannot believe we would all stop at simply electing a President. I will slate my vote to Ron Paul in November, and I will commit to continuing turning the ship around, until it, or I, am done.
Patriotism is not a tattoo, a badge, nor a slander. Patriotism is exactly what everyone here is doing, positive or negative as it may be, it is activism towards personal freedom. If we all take the time to examine what “personal freedom” is for each of us, we will all have differing conclusions, but they will all have the same foundation, fair and friendly pursuits of happiness. Those who disagree, are probably bitter, but not the enemy.
Rich,
This is wisdom. It would serve us well to continue to assume that men are rational and can be educated and freely choose right, rather than demonize and belittle our opponents.
Righ now, McCain only has about 800 bound delegates. The rest are called soft delegates and must vote for him in the first round of voting at the National Convention for him to be elected the official nominee for the Republican party.
If any of the delegates he has currently, of the 1300 or so delegates he’s acquired in the primaries, don’t vote for him in the first round of voting, and McCain doesn’t get the required number of delegate votes, then it becomes a BROKERED convention.
This is VERY likely what will happen in September, judging from the massive discontent and dissention already happening in the Republican party. Quite a few of McCain’s bound delegates are Ron Paul people, and many of the unbound delegates are Ron Paul people. Just because the delegates are bound does not mean they have to vote for McCain.
This is how we will win in September, and then put Paul up against Obama in any debate, and it’s hands down Paul.
Ron Paul will be our 44th President…mark my words!!!!!
Wanda,
I love your passion, but… I have to interject regarding the “looser” (loser), comment against Colin. These are comments that, well, have given US, as RP supporters, the Paultard moniker. We know the math, the apathy, the contentiousness, and the potential for McCain to self implode prior to the convention, it’s already happening. BUT, there are forces here we cannot contend with in the immediate. Pretend you are waking people up. How would you respond to the ‘in your face’ method, vs a passive aggressive manner? Again, your passion is commendable, though you should consider being more subversive in your persuasion, not to say sneaky, but delightfully purposeful in your quest to gain followers. Keep in mind just how long we have been sleeping, and I for one would like the masses to wake up on the “right side of the bed”, and not by scalding water thrown at them. Keep educating without pandering or scolding, and I bet by November, you personally will enlighten 10 times more people. I suggest reading “The Art of War”, and re-evaluating your posture, but do not change your passion. I know it’s easy to get excited, so try to spend your moments frugally, your energy will go further.
Colin, thanks for the response earlier.
Excellent article, thank you. I have been a Ron Paul supporter for about a year now, and this past year has been one of the most intense in my short 37 years. It has been delightful to go to a rally and enjoy the kind of fervor, usually meant for evangelicals and rock stars, for a old Texas Doc and a message that inspires.
I have never believed that he could win, and honestly, I almost don’t want him to. Guaranteed that our next president will be shot at more than once, whoever the victor will be (Obama). But what he HAS done is inspire people like myself to…I don’t know, become better Americans?
I just finished his book, and it’s so good. Simple, like the message truly is. two and two are still four, right? I’m kind of weak on economics, but thanks to Dr. Paul, I now know, and have some interest in things like CPI and M3. I question the value of granting this gift, and holding that carrot back, and saber-rattling, and “sanctions”, and our “wide-stance” foreign policy .
re Rich’s last comment: Yeah. Respect for others is a KEY part of the Liberty Concept.
re Wanda’s rant: I do not have a hanging chad’s worth of doubt that the convention will be 1-2-3 McCain. Bush-era GOP operatives have been watching this primary process go on and I guarantee you, they will figure out a way to stifle ANY uprising. The GOP has a nice, Democrat-like candidate who talks pretty about the constitution, knows how to look solemn on cue, and who will get his hat handed to him by Mr. Obama. It IS a done deal, but to the RP delegates, I certainly encourage you to go, fight, win, and be sure you know the convention rules forwards and backwards.
‘Crazy neo-Confederate Ron Paul will never be president. That is a GOOD thing.’
“Yes! Totally agree. The last thing America needs are balanced budgets, a sensible foreign policy, sound currency, personal liberties, and strong national sovereignty.

Balanced budgets? Neutrality? SOUND MONEY?? Liberty? National Sovereignty?
Those are the craziest ideas I’ve ever heard. Debt is good and derivatives are even better! Three cheers for the largest debt bubble in the history of mankind. Hip Hip Horay! Hip Hip Horay! Hip Hip Horay!
Great article and thanks to Wanda for fighting our course. Unfortunately the reality is that most people are not yet aware of the problems we are in. This is not their fault and nothing we should blame anyone for - it is just a fact.
We need people like Wanda to do the shaking and we need people like Ron Paul to take a less direct approach to confrontation and we need all the many people I see on all these blogs - what a good bunch. The quality of the comments and the motivation to help the change process along. Basically we need everybody, because the majority of people still are not aware of any of this or has put it to one side as extreme or worse.
So to all of you - thank you for your efforts and keep up fighting the way you know best. If Ron Paul doesn’t win in November, the pain will increase over the coming years and with this pain more and more people will become aware that change is coming whether we like it or not and the sooner we do something about it the better.
Although I believe the convention will be brokered, I think there are only about 500-600 RP supporters who made it to nationals.
Its crazy to see how much Americans fear actual freedom and liberty.
Many seem to have a natural fear of their own constitution. Paul ran on wanting to enforce the rule of law and pro-Americanism. His would have been a great traditional presidency. Luckily though his ideas will not be fading away by any means in the future. He has changed the nature of politics and patriotism for good. Ron Paul is a true Patriot. If he can’t make it in, then Bob Barr all the way. Why would any conservative want to vote for one of the 2 liberal democrats Mccain and Obama?
There’s no bias here. I think Ron Paul had a very intriguing campaign, but is this site anymore than a cheerleading squad for Ron Paul. And this take is just as balanced and objective as the Huckabee’s a Socialist, Populist, Collectivist, Fascist claims. I wonder if Ron Paul’s broad appeal to the common man is more evidence that he’s a stealth populist.
When you look at these two commentaries side by side you have to wonder if there is a Zeal for the Truth or just a Zeal to be Relevant.
Sorry, that probably was actually ad-hominem.
Zeal for truth comes only with great humility and patience. To be clear, Ron Paul did have some good success and I hope that goes to good use, but when someone looks at these two articles you’ve written it comes across as sour grapes. Are all the contributors to this blog Ron Paul supporters?
Mike,
We have had several articles critical of Paul and his campaign. Nobody is saying Paul is the second coming - but in evaluating his campaign for it’s goals he did quite well. Heck, Huckabee had the same thing happen.
Just read the piece: it is not a glorification of Paul, or even his positions. It is merely a statement that his campaign ended up “winning” in the sense that it accomplished much more than it should have.
The Huckabee article is a look at the things Huckabee has said and what his alternatives are to the “heartless, callous, soulless” libertarian republicanism that he derided. based on his statements and actions, Huckabee’s alternative is right-wing socialism.
Yes, we agree a lot more with Ron Paul’s virtually spotless record on the constitution and liberty. We disagree on some of his other policies and points to varying degrees. Again, this has nothing to do with the persons of Paul and Huckabee, and everything to do with the kind of policies, ideals and philosophies of each man.
Defeat for Ron Paul in September at the National Convention or in the Presidential race in November IS NOT AN OPTION.
Rich: I’ve read the Art of War and am married to a man who’s taught the principles of the Art of War for over 25 years. I know it well. But I also know that when it’s time to throw down the gauntlet and raise the banner of war, especially with insiders, like you all are, then the time for subversive tactics are over.
Ron Paul needs an ARMY of supporters now. We are in the final heat of this race, and no pressure can be taken off the battle field. I completely agree that there is an art to how we proceed and a dance to make it all happen, but no one should allow one moment of apathy, cynicism, hopelessness, laziness or ANYTHING from preventing us from PUSHING forward, no matter the cost.
Let me say it again, WE CANNOT, AS A NATION, NOR AS A FREE PEOPLE, TOLERATE 4 MORE YEARS OF THE LIES, DECEIT AND DICTATORSHIPS THAT HAVE CONSPIRED TO DESTROY OUR CONSTITUTION AND RULE OF LAW. America will be so much more dramatically disengaged from our founding, after four more years at the hands of Obama or McCain, that we will then be forced to have to pick up and bear arms against our own government and the governments of others who will then be controlling us. The only other alternative is to accept being the slaves they want us to be.
The political forces pushing to destroy us, stepped up their plan into overdrive with Bush, they are anxious to take us apart NOW, and fulfill their one world order agenda. Obama and McCain are backed by guys like Soros whose only ambition at this point in his life is to take control over the U.S. and bring us into political slavery.
It’s either we ALL GET THAT, stop what they are doing to us, or agree to let it happen. Waiting four more years to try to do THEN what we have the opportunity to do NOW, is madness, but typical of the stalls we have all been led into.
RON PAUL FOR PRESIDENT, 2008!!!!!
RON PAUL FOR RE-ELECTION 2012!!!!!!
Colin,
That was a very nice and reasoned response. Thank you!
Obviously, Huckabe comments offended some from a Libertarian view, but I really think those we’re not intended to decribe a Ron Paul type position, but rather the fiscal conservative, social liberal types ala Mitt Romney, the like and the talk show celebrities that keep hammering fiscal issues and only giving lip service to Pro-Life, etc. I also think that he was referring to the language and harshness towards immigrants. It should be legal immigration, but whatever solutions that we come to should carefully demonstrate that we are not hostile to the Mexican people. I personally think that the immigration from Mexico can be important in dealing with our demographic imbalance going forward for the next few decades.
Yes, immigration is one of my major disagreements with Ron Paul - if not THE MAJOR disagreement.
THE COURT IS BACK IN SESSION.
Please be seated. The case of “Mr. Colin” vs. Court of Concerned Citizens for cautious judgements and rigorous logic.
First we look at Exhibit “A” titled: “Miked Huckabee: Right-Wing Socialist” dated June 2, 2008
The Prosecution has identified these three excerpts promoted as statements of fact by the defendent. Whereas the evidence and reasoning process did not support those conclusions. For example, whereas the original statements by Mr. Huckabee could be construed as Socialist, it does proove that therefore Mr. Huckabee is a Socialist. One who makes Socialist statements is not necessarily a Socialist.
First: “Huckabee, however, is unapologetically a fascist in the dictionary definition of the word. ”
Second: “He is opposed to social freedom”
Third: “Huckabee, on the other hand argues that historic republicanism is, well, his right-wing socialism. ”
Does the defense have a response to address the proper logical justification for these bold claims without insulting Aristotle?
The Jury had found that these assertions as fact have been found in violation of proper and disciplined use of logic and the defendent has been unable to demonstrate adequate evidence and proper logical process without insulting Aristotle. The Jury has found that the defendent has called Mr. Huckabee “names” and assigned viewpoints to him without proof that are, as a matter, insulting to Mr. Huckabee. In fact in the Title of the document itself it appears as if a claim is made that Mr. Huckabee is in fact a Socialist.
The Jury therefore has found the defendent, Mr. Colin, to be GUILTY of the following charges,
- “NAME CALLING”
- “OVER STATEMENT”
and - “SENSATIONALISM”
And for his crime he is sentenced to 3 months of Community Service inlcuding the following in reparation for said infraction:
- Give food to the Hungry,
- Give Drink to the Thirsty
- Clothe the Naked,
- Give comfort the Poor,
- and visit those in prison
Mr. Huckabee is to accept this service as recompense for said offensive and sensationalised statements.
Your partners, Chris A and Ornot the Incredible (or something like that), are also sentenced to once month’s service each. And you are instructed then to report back your findings on this blog dedicated to truth.
You are also to be advised, that the Three Strike Rule is in full effect at this time due to public’s strident desire to avoid light sentencing and therefore if you commit two additional violations the court will be forced to suspend you from the blogosphere and you could be sentenced to do organic farming for the poor for a period of up to three years.
************************************************************
ha :), Hey that’s the best I could do. You are just going to have to throw yourself at the mercy of the court.
Not much more I can do with this. I can’t prove you’re not a Socialist either or a Fascist for the matter…or that you are.
Heres’ a cheer to a sense of humor and good will, Mike
Matthew 25
34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
Politics needs to include this somewhere, somehow. I’m not saying the government needs to lead this of course, but it should be part of our dialogue in our political community and our local communities. It’s not entirely separate from how we run our communities and our governments.
Just my view, Mike
Words. Semantics. idiots over analyzing political pony shows. if you don’t see what is coming, then you will die. if you see it, prepare. this country is now doomed with a big bullseye painted on the Constitution. The Ron Paul campaign was the LAST hope for this sorry nation full of lazy perverts and couch potatos. The fact that so many blind idiots can support the likes of Obama or McCain just shows me that this country doesn’t deserve to be free. I’m surrounded by slaves and talking heads. No more men/women of ACTION!
My advice…connect with those of a similar philosophy and hunker down for what is coming. The USA is scheduled for demolition to make way for the NWO.
Wonderful article Colin.
This is the same exact thing that I keep repeating to everyone I know. And that is you cannot suppress a good idea forever.
This is how America was born. From an idea. One lone man (George Washington) gathering more and more people and support.
And guess what? Just like today, the newspapers were shunning, joking and smearing George Washington on a daily basis. The media pandered to the King of England and did everything that it could to quell the American revolt.
But eventualy, the ideas of liberty and equality caught on.
And once that happened nothing could stop it.
And that is what this excellent article is about. It’s about the long term picture. It’s about how to really measure success.
And in that sense Ron Paul has been very successfull in accomplishing the same thing that George Washington did, he’s started a revolution.
“You say you want a revolution” - The Beatles
Nice post Wanda and I agree whole-heartily with everything you said.
I’d hate to be in a fox hole with some of these so called “Patriots” who would shudder and surrender at the first sound of gunfire. Pathetic!
